…The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.
Wallace Stevens, “The Emperor of Ice-Cream”
The past two weeks we’ve been talking a lot about formal elements in my directing class, which has delved us into poetry and music. We often speak about how each shot should be like a sentence, clearly articulating the necessary meaning, and ultimately taking us someplace new and progressing the story forward.
Poetry often moves to remarkable places with a progression of concise lines and much beauty, so it really has been helpful and inspiring. To be honest I haven’t read much poetry since high school, but I picked up a book of Wallace Stevens poems on the way home from school today.
